Tom Dawkins, un emprendedor nato que desde sus inicios universitarios en Australia, quiso crear herramientas de expresión para los jóvenes a través de los medios de comunicación, las artes y la tecnología. En 2003 Vibewire (uno de sus proyectos) fue nombrado “NSW Microempresa del Año sin ánimo de lucro” y en 2005 recibió el Premio de la Cumbre Mundial de la Juventud por la participación comunitaria en el marco de la Cumbre Mundial sobre la Sociedad de información. En 2007 fue galardonado con el Premio Cumbre de Liderazgo en la Cumbre del Futuro, organizada por Davos Connections y Global YouthActionNet. Un año más tarde, en 2008 fue nombrado estratega de marketing digital y Director de Medios Sociales en Ashoka - Innovadores para el Público en Washington DC, un nuevo puesto creado para Dawkins con un enfoque en la utilización de tecnologías sociales para inspirar a la gente a convertirse en agentes de cambio. En Ashoka estableció nuevas propiedades para el uso de los medios de comunicación social, capacitación directiva y de estrategia y apoyó el aumento del uso de los medios de comunicación social en todos los aspectos del trabajo de la organización.

Tom Dawkins, a born social entrepreneur, who since the beginnings of his university studies in Australia wanted to create tools for the young students, to express themselves through communication medias, arts and technology.
In 2003 Vibe wire was awarded the NSW Non-Profit Micro business of the Year Award and in 2005 received the World Summit Youth Award for Community Engagement as part of the World Summit on the Information Society. In 2007 he was given the Future Summit Leadership Award at the Future Summit, organized by Australian Davos Connections and a Global Youth Action Net Fellowship from the International Youth Foundation.
One year later in 2008 he was being appointed Digital Marketing Strategist and Social Media Director at Ashoka - Innovators for the Public in Washington, DC, a new position created for Dawkins with a focus on utilizing social technologies to inspire people to become changemakers. At Ashoka he established new social media properties, conducted trainings, created policy and strategy and supported the increased use of social media in all aspects of the organization's work.

What are the objectives of “Start Some Good” and what is it based on?
StartSomeGood.com is a new platform for social entrepreneurs to raise funds and grow their community, to make the leap from ideas to action and impact. Our goal is to make it a little easier for changemakers to make a difference.
StartSomeGood is virtual and global. We have team members in the US, Canada and Australia and have so far hosted projects from 10 countries.

How does Star Some Good work? Who can benefit from Start Some Good?
Projects on StartSomeGood set two goals for their fundraising campaign – their ultimate goal and a “tipping point” goal, which they must reach before the end of their campaign (usually between 14 and 60 days) or no money changes hands. Supporters are acknowledged with creative and unique rewards.
Anyone who wants to run a project to better the world can benefit from StartSomeGood! Our platform allows all social change projects, whether nonprofit, for profit or unincorporated, to raise funds side-by-side, based on their vision and community connections rather than their tax status.

El futuro no es casualidad. Es el resultado de las acciones y decisiones que tomamos ahora. Para influenciar el futuro tenemos que crearlo proactivo, si no simplemente vivimos con las consecuencias de las acciones y decisiones tomados por otros.
What do you mean by the phrase “"If you're not creating the future you're living in the past."?
The future doesn’t just happen. It is the result of actions and decisions taken now. To influence the future we must be proactively creating it, otherwise you simply are living with the consequences of actions and decisions already taken by others.

After supporting a social entrepreneur to start his Project, does Start Some Good do a follow up on the projects?
We stay in touch with our ventures to support them however we can and ensure that rewards are delivered to supporters. We welcome ventures to run multiple fundraising campaigns over time, using StartSomeGood as a hub for their community-building activities.
¿Cómo se financia el proyecto Start Some Good? ¿Qué es el crowd funding?
Tomamos el 5% del monto conseguido, de los proyectos exitosos. Si el proyecto no llega al “tipping point”, no hay ninguna cuota ya que los compromisos no se llevan a cabo.
“Crowd founding” simplemente significa recaudar fondos de la comunidad, de un número de donantes pequeños en vez de sólo un donante grande o una fundación.
How is the Project Start Some Good financed? What is “crowd funding”?
We take a 5% cut of successful projects. If the project does not reach its tipping point there is no fee as the pledges are not processed.
Crowd funding simply means to fundraise from the community, from numerous smaller donors than a single big donor or foundation.

I like them all! Our most successful fundraiser though was the Do Good Bus who raised over $100,000.

El éxito que los changemakers usen nuestra plataforma el éxito más grande. Ya en estos nueve meses de vida que llevamos con la plataforma hemos visto varios proyectos emocionantes, consiguiendo fondos para poder llevarse a cabo, gracias a nuestras herramientas. Esta es la esencia de StartSomeGood.
What has been the biggest achievement of Start Some Good?
The success of the changemakers using our platform is our greatest success. Already in our 9 month existence we have seen numerous exciting ventures get off the ground thanks to our tools which is what it’s all about!

In your opinion, what are the main obstacles that hinder the social entrepreneur movement?
One big obstacle is the barrier built around certain tax statuses, that says only tax-deductible charities are worthy of philanthropic support. This deters many potential changemakers from realizing their vision and just isn’t necessary for crowd funding – micro-philanthropists are much more daring than the big foundations!
¿Qué opina sobre la Responsabilidad social empresarial, va por buen camino?
Pienso que todas las corporaciones tienen una responsabilidad para crear un impacto positivo en vez de negativo sobre la sociedad y el medioambiente. Esto debe de ser logrado a través de sus bases de operaciones, alineando sus modelos de empresas con los principios sociales, no solo una imagen creada como herramienta de marketing basándose en programas de RSC. Esto es lo que vemos mucho y eso no es un verdadero progreso.
What is your opinion on Corporate Social Responsibility? Is it going the right direction?
I think all corporations have a responsibility to create a positive rather than negative impact on society and the environment. This should be achieved through their core operations however, by aligning their business model with social principles, not just as a siloed and powerless marketing-based CSR program, which is what we see a lot of. That’s not real progres.
Start Some Good tiene página web, blog y está presente en Twitter y Facebook. ¿Qué importancia tiene internet y las redes sociales a la hora de difundir un proyecto como el suyo?
Es absolutamente importante, un proyecto como el nuestro sólo es posible en el mundo web 2.0. No sólo necesitamos las redes sociales para correr la voz, conectarnos con los emprendedores sociales por todo el mundo y hacer crecer nuestra comunidad, sino que también nos apoyamos en la infraestructura del cloud (estrategia de necogio) para poder lanzar nuestro sitio de manera más económica.
Start Some Good has a web page, a blog and is present in Facebook and Twitter. What role do the Internet and the Social Networks play, divulging a Project like yours?
They are absolutely critical; a project like ours is only possible in the web2.0 world. Not only do we rely on social networks to spread the word, connect with social entrepreneurs around the world and grow our community but we relied on cloud infrastructure to launch our site inexpensively.
¿Alguna anécdota o experiencia que recuerde de forma especial desde que lleva a cabo el proyecto Start Some Good?
Una de las mejores historias hasta ahora es la historia de Jack McDermott y su proyecto “Balbus Speech”. Jack creció con un impedimento de hablar y por eso él sabía de sus propias experiencias los costos y retos de recibir un tratamiento y apoyo. Él quería usar la tecnología del móvil para hacer la terapia de hablar más accesible y asequible, pero necesitaba fondos para poder empezar. Fue uno de los primeros proyectos que se inscribió en nuestra plataforma y él ha sido capaz de recaudar los fondos que necesitaba para construir su primer App, Speech4Good. Pero lo más importante fue descubrir el apoyo que necesitaba para hacer su sueño realidad por parte de la comunidad.

Do you have an anecdote or special experience about your project that you can tell us?
One of best StartSomeGood stories so far is that of Jack McDermott and his venture Balbus Speech. Jack grew up with a speech impediment and so knew first-hand the costs and challenges of receiving treatment and support. He wanted to use mobile technologies to make speech therapy more accessible and affordable but needed some seed funding to start. As one of our very first ventures he was able to raise the funds he needed to build his first app, Speech4Good. But more importantly he discovered the community support he needed to make his dream a reality.

“Not only did our StartSomeGood campaign provide us with seed funding for the development of our first product, Speech4Good, but it also united us with an entire cast of like-minded supporters. This resulting community, I would argue, is equally valuable to the future success of our social venture.”

What are the plans for Start Some Good? Where do you see your Project in the next 10 years?
We just want to continue to grow and provide opportunities to changemakers all around the world, not only in terms of fundraising but volunteer recruitment, community-building and educational programs to support the growth and development of social change initiatives.
¿Qué supuso para Tom Dawkins recibir el premio Youth Action Net Global Fellow en el año 2007 por su labor social? ¿Qué ha cambiado desde entonces?
Ha sido un honor enorme y una experiencia maravillosa. Compartiendo con los changemakers siempre es una experiencia inspiradora y de crecimiento. Únicamente los emprendedores sociales pueden entender verdaderamente el viaje de ser un emprendedor social, compartiendo y conectando con mis compañeros ha sido increíble.
What did it mean to Tom Dawkins and to receive the Youth Action Net Global Fellow Award in the year 2007 for his social work?
It was a great honour and a wonderful experience. Spending time with changemakers is always an inspiring and nurturing experience. Only other social entrepreneurs can truly understand the journey of being a social entrepreneur so to share and connect with my peers was incredible.
Como joven emprendedor social, ¿qué consejo daría a los que tienen un proyecto en mente pero no se atreven o no tienen recursos para llevarlo a cabo?
Mi recomendación es simplemente empezar. Empieza a contar a la gente de tu idea. Empieza a conectarte con personas que comparten tus intereses. Empieza a buscar que más hay ahí afuera y con quien puedes trabajar. Lánzate y hazlo, se necesita tanto cambio y por eso te necesitamos a ti! ¿Qué bien quieres hacer tú? ¡Aquí estamos para ayudarte a conseguirlo!
As a social entrepreneur, what tips can you give to other people that have an idea for a project but that are afraid to start it or maybe lack the resources?
My advice is to just start. Start telling people about your idea. Start connecting with people who share your interests. Start researching what else is out there and who you could work with. Get out there and do it, there’s so much change that needs to happen and we need you! What good do you want to start? We are here to help you make it happen!
